Chilfi Ghati & Maikal Pass

Rising sharply from the plains of Chhattisgarh into the lush highlands of the Maikal range, Chilfi Ghati is one of the state's most scenic mountain passes. Situated along National Highway 30, roughly 45 kilometers from Kawardha, the road climbs through hairpin turns enveloped in thick canopies of towering sal, teak, and bamboo.

The Mountain Atmosphere

The sudden transition in elevation brings an immediate change in climate. Chilfi Ghati is noticeably cooler than the Kawardha plains year-round, and during the monsoon and winter seasons, heavy morning mist curls through the treetops, lending the pass a magical, dreamlike quality.

• Valley Overlooks: Several paved pull-offs along the upper bends provide vantage points overlooking deep, unspoiled forest valleys stretching toward Madhya Pradesh.
• Flora & Fauna: The corridor connects with the wider Kanha-Achanakmar ecological landscape. Troops of langurs, spotted deer, and diverse bird species such as the Malabar pied hornbill and crested serpent eagle are frequently sighted along the road verge.
• Roadside Dhaba Stops: Tiny rustic tea stalls near the check-post offer hot ginger chai, freshly fried pakoras, and mineral water—a quintessential Indian hill road experience.

Travel Recommendations

The pass is best experienced in the morning hours between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM when the light filters dramatically through the tree cover. Ensure your vehicle brakes and tires are in good condition for the incline.
