Bhoramdeo Temple

Standing serenely at the foot of the Maikal mountain range, roughly 18 kilometers from Kawardha town, the Bhoramdeo Temple represents one of Central India's crowning architectural achievements. Built during the 11th century by the Nagavanshi rulers, the complex is colloquially hailed as the "Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh" due to its intricate sculptural friezes and soaring shikhar (spire).

The Architecture & Setting

The temple faces east and rests upon a five-foot stone platform (jagati). The exterior walls are adorned with three tiers of stone sculptures featuring deities, celestial nymphs (apsaras), mythical beasts (gajas, shardulas), and erotic motifs that echo the famous artistic traditions of Khajuraho and Konark.

The main sanctum (garbhagriha) houses an ancient Shivling carved of polished black stone, alongside historical statues of Vishnu, Ganesha, and royal patron figures. What makes Bhoramdeo truly distinctive is its harmony with the natural topography: the dark sandstone monument rises directly against the dense sal forests and mist-veiled peaks of the Maikal range, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of spiritual quietude.

What to Look Out For

• The Mandap Pillars: The central pillared hall features sixteen intricately carved monolithic columns, each depicting mythological lore and geometric medallions.
• The Spring Reservoir: Beside the temple lies a historic step-pond whose waters reflect the temple tower during the morning golden hour.
• The Pushpanjali Sculptures: Notice the fine detail in the stone work—drapery folds, jewellery, and facial expressions preserved for over nine centuries.

Best Time to Visit

Mornings between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM are sublime. The sunrise illuminates the east-facing stone façade, and the surrounding village of Chaura remains peaceful. During the spring months of March and April, the precinct hosts the district's flagship Bhoramdeo Mahotsav, showcasing classical arts, folk music, and local tribal handicrafts.
