Situated within easy walking distance of Rajmahal Chowk in the historic core of town, the Radha Krishna Mandir is an essential spiritual and architectural landmark of Kawardha. Established around 180 years ago under the patronage of King Ujiyar Singh, this sacred complex reflects the deep Vaishnavite traditions of the erstwhile royal dynasty.
Architectural Features
The temple's sanctum houses exquisitely polished marble murtis of Lord Krishna and Radha. The surrounding mandap is constructed with hand-dressed local sandstone, featuring sculpted brackets, floral friezes, and carved wooden ceiling beams that have stood the test of nearly two centuries.
Beneath the main altar lies a historic subterranean chamber (bhoikot), historically utilized by spiritual ascetics for undisturbed meditation and secure storage of sacred relics.
Visiting Experience
Early mornings (around 6:00 AM) and evening twilight (around 7:00 PM) during the aarti ceremony are especially atmospheric, accompanied by the ringing of brass bells, traditional cymbals, and harmonium chants. Visitors of all backgrounds are welcomed with warmth and quiet hospitality.
